Navarro County was created by Texas Legislature in 1846 and was named after Texas Patriot Jose Antonio Navarro. The county seat, Corsicana, was formed from a 100 acres site selected by a legislative committee in 1846. Corsicana was name after Corsicana the homeland of the father of Jose Antonio Navarro. Navarro county lies in the North Central portion of Texas.
Oil and agriculture were the mainstays of economic development until the mid 1980′s when manufacturing, distribution and food processing diversified the source of economic development. The agricultural economy is diverse with income split between livestock, crop, wildlife and horticulture enterprises. Cow-calf, stocker cattle, horse production and wild game animals account for the primary sources of animal agriculture while crop income is derived from cotton, sorghum, wheat, corn, pecans and herbs.
Navarro County is recognized for the longest continuous oil flow in Texas with over 200 million barrels produced since 1895. Other minerals include sand and gravel.
Business income resources include diversified manufacturing, agribusinesses, oil field operations and distribution.
Recreation in Navarro County includes the Richland Chambers Creek Reservoir, Navarro Mills Lake, Pioneer Village, Warehouse Living Arts Center, the Palace Theater, the Cook Center for Arts, Science and Technology, historic sites and homes. Major events including the Navarro County Youth Exposition and the Derrick Days Celebration.
Other attractions of Navarro County include the world famous Collin Street Bakery, Navarro College, Russell Stover Candy Company and Navarro Regional Hospital.
The Texas AgriLife Extension Service offers programs and information in Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H, and Agricultural and Natural Resources. The programs and activities conducted in Navarro County represent the efforts of trained volunteers who expand and extend the efforts of the Extension professionals.
